His knowledge of the battlefields, orders of battle and stories of those battles in Monte Cassino might not be those of a professional military historian, but they were certainly good enough for me as an amateur with a keen interest. Plus he brings what many can’t; a personal approach to the situation (he and his family were all from Cassino; his father and family were actually in the monastery during the war etc.) The walk is fairly tiring but Pino is considerate, making regular stops for explanations etc. Anyone used to, say, Munro Bagging or with any experience of Hill walking will find the walk a breeze. His English is - idiosyncratic, shall we say! But again, certainly good enough to get the information across to this ignoramus of the Italian language. Above all his enthusiasm is real and therefore the experience of walking around this astounding area with him feels genuine too. Very warmly recommended.
